Hardly any other band has shaken up the Central European jazz scene in recent years quite like Shake Stew. While Die ZEIT hailed them as “Austria’s jazz band of the moment” and German broadcaster NDR was quick to elevate them to “cult band” status, it became undeniably clear—at the latest with their wins at the 2023 Amadeus Music Awards and the 2021 German Jazz Prize in the category “International Band of the Year”—that something has been set in motion here that hasn’t existed in this form before. And it shows no signs of slowing down.
From the very beginning, this ensemble—founded by bassist and composer Lukas Kranzelbinder—has been surrounded by a mystical aura that unfolds an irresistibly hypnotic effect in live performance, one that few can escape. “The unspoken magic words are ‘energy’ and ‘mysticism’—Shake Stew brings something ritualistic to contemporary jazz, a real enrichment!”, wrote the German Record Critics’ Award jury in its statement for including the group in its 2020 best-of list. The British magazine MOJO put it even more viscerally: “Able to blind you into a trance and make you dance to your knees, Shake Stew twists, blisters and burns like a fevered dream!”
Despite its unusual lineup—two drummers, two basses, and three horns—the band consistently manages to strike a chord with listeners of all ages in a remarkably direct way, whether performing in a packed standing-room club or a sold-out Great Hall of the Vienna Konzerthaus.

Hypnotic soundscapes and driving rhythms have defined the band’s sound from the start. But just when you think you’ve cracked the code of their magical musical stew, Shake Stew reveals the full tonal spectrum of its unique instrumentation. At the edge of absolute silence, sonic structures emerge from nowhere—delicately crafted from trance-like repeated bass lines and gong patterns—that move the listener with their fragility and stillness just as deeply as the explosive grooves that came before.
“There is something about this band that is new and special—and incredibly compelling,” wrote Die ZEIT in its analysis. And no matter which side of Shake Stew grabs you more forcefully: your body will still be resonating long after the final note.

Kaum eine andere Band hat die zentraleuropäische Jazzszene in den letzten Jahren so aufgewühlt wie Shake Stew. Während Die ZEIT sie als „Österreichs Jazzband der Stunde“ feierte und der deutsche Sender NDR sie kurzerhand zum „Kult-Ensemble“ erhob, wurde spätestens mit den Auszeichnungen bei den Amadeus Music Awards 2023 sowie dem Deutschen Jazzpreis 2021 in der Kategorie „Internationale Band des Jahres“ unübersehbar: Hier ist etwas in Bewegung geraten, das es in dieser Form bisher nicht gab – und das kein Ende zu nehmen scheint.  Von Anfang an umgab das Ensemble – gegründet vom Bassisten und Komponisten Lukas Kranzelbinder – eine mystische Aura, die sich bei Live-Auftritten in eine unwiderstehlich hypnotische Wirkung verwandelt, der sich kaum jemand entziehen kann. „Die unausgesprochenen Zauberworte lauten ‚Energie‘ und ‚Mystik‘ – Shake Stew bringt etwas Ritualhaftes in den zeitgenössischen Jazz, eine echte Bereicherung!“, so die Jury des Preises der deutschen Schallplattenkritik, die die Band 2020 in ihre Bestenliste aufnahm. Das britische Magazin MOJO formulierte es noch eindringlicher: „Shake Stew kann dich in Trance versetzen und bis auf die Knie tanzen lassen – sie wirbeln, brennen und glühen wie ein fiebriger Traum!“ Trotz ihrer ungewöhnlichen Besetzung – zwei Schlagzeuge, zwei Bässe und drei Bläser – gelingt es der Band immer wieder, Hörer*innen aller Altersklassen auf erstaunlich direkte Weise zu erreichen – sei es im rappelvollen Club mit Stehplätzen oder im ausverkauften Großen Saal des Wiener Konzerthauses „Man muss Jazz nicht mögen, um Shake Stew zu lieben: Die Band um Lukas Kranzelbinder ist von Kopf bis Fuß auf Ekstase gestimmt. Oder um es mit Nietzsche zu sagen: Das ist keine Musik, das ist Dynamit!“ (Wiener Zeitung) Hypnotische Klanglandschaften und treibende Rhythmen prägen von Beginn an den Sound der Band. Doch gerade wenn man glaubt, das Geheimnis ihres musikalischen Zaubertranks durchschaut zu haben, entfaltet Shake Stew das ganze klangliche Spektrum seiner einzigartigen Besetzung: An der Grenze zur völligen Stille entstehen aus dem Nichts fragile Klangstrukturen – fein gewoben aus tranceartigen Bassfiguren und Gongmustern – die mit ihrer Zerbrechlichkeit und Ruhe ebenso tief berühren wie zuvor die explosiven Grooves. „Diese Band hat etwas Neues, Besonderes – und ungemein Fesselndes“, analysierte Die ZEIT. Und ganz gleich, welche Seite von Shake Stew dich mehr ergreift: Dein Körper wird noch lange nach dem letzten Ton nachschwingen.
