Theodor ist ein hochgelobtes Psychedelic-“Sweet Soul”-Bandprojekt aus der Region Darmstadt und Frankfurt am Main. Gegründet wurde das Kollektiv 2020 von engen Freund:innen und lokalen Musiker:innen, darunter Robert Herz (DJ, Vinylsammler und Drummer von Okta Logue) sowie Co-Gründer Lui Hill (Vocals/Percussion). Der Bandname stammt von einer 24-jährigen Katze, die während der ersten Pandemie-Recordings im Raum anwesend war.
Musikalisch verbindet Theodor warme 70s Soul- und Funk-Elemente mit 80s Synthesizern, Farfisa-Orgeln, Fender Rhodes und melodischen Basslines. Getragen von Robert Herz’ organischem, souligem Drumming entsteht ein cineastischer, weicher Sound, ergänzt durch die charakteristischen und harmonischen Stimmen von Max und Lui.
Aus einem Studio-Projekt wurde schnell eine Live-Band mit internationaler Resonanz: Nach ihrem Debütalbum auf dem französischen Label Broc Recordz folgten Aufmerksamkeit von KEXP sowie Vinyl-DJs weltweit. Es entstanden Club- und Tourauftritte in Deutschland, den USA und darüber hinaus, darunter u.a. das Knust in Hamburg.
Neben ihren Releases realisierte die Band auch Charity-Projekte, darunter eine limitierte Picture-Disc-Veröffentlichung in Zusammenarbeit mit Vinyl Digital, deren Erlöse an die Kinderhilfsorganisation Main Lichtblick gingen.

Theodor is a critically acclaimed psychedelic “sweet soul” band based in the Darmstadt and Frankfurt am Main region. The project was founded in 2020 by a collective of close friends and local musicians, including Robert Herz (DJ, vinyl collector, and drummer of Okta Logue) and co-founder Lui Hill (vocals/percussion). The band is named after a 24-year-old cat that was present in the room during their first pandemic-era recording sessions.
Musically, Theodor blends warm 70s soul and funk influences with 80s synthesizers, Farfisa organs, Fender Rhodes, and melodic basslines. Driven by Robert Herz’s soulful, organic drumming and complemented by the distinctive vocal interplay between Max and Lui, their sound creates a cinematic and mellow atmosphere.
What began as a studio project quickly evolved into a live band with international reach. Their debut album, released on the French independent label Broc Recordz, gained attention from tastemakers such as KEXP in Seattle and vinyl communities worldwide. The band has since toured across Germany and the United States, including standout shows at venues like Knust in Hamburg.
In addition to their releases, Theodor has also worked on charitable projects, including a limited-edition picture disc released with Vinyl Digital, with proceeds donated to the children’s charity Main Lichtblick.
